Experiences as an ECGI-Vlog member at the EuGMS Congress - Oct 2023

Author: Bárbara Machado Magalhaes

For a geriatrician who trained outside Europe, as I did, the opportunity to interact with colleagues of the "Early Career Geriatricians Initiative" (ECGI) is particularly meaningful. As a curious person and eager to study, but also keen on experiences in real life and different contexts, I am delighted with the interpersonal and interprofessional exchange at the European Geriatric Medicine Society (EuGMS). Coming from South America, I have looked for a Master's degree in Europe to learn more about the dissemination of scientific knowledge throughout the world. Even though I only practise Geriatrics via Telemedicine at the moment, I am looking for opportunities to explore the knowledge of my field outside my country. Enthusiastic about sharing knowledge and motivating communication in a variety of ways, I applied to join the Vlog working group when I was welcomed to the EuGMS, and found a great interaction with particularly receptive colleagues, beginning to brainstorm ideas for work, to be carried out during the annual Congress in Helsinki. And when we got there, in September 2023, I must mention an excitement and nervousness of experiencing something new with a given responsibility in the group, even so in a pleasant and enjoyable way. Thank you, Lene Holst Andersen, because with your partnership and experience in the VLOG group, it was a fantastic match, besides the friendly and efficient pair of Finnish video-makers who assisted us. Our achievements included 14 interviews with presenters at the poster sessions, 3 interviews with the winners of the ECGI Stefania Maggi Award, an interview with a representative of the Lancet Journal, and 9 interviews covering the role of EuGMS and the importance of intergenerational and multiprofessional interactions in such events and daily work dynamics. In a contemporary digitalised world, with the powerful availability of different communication technologies, we can easily access and share experiences for good clinical practices across continents, and I seek to better understand how knowledge is generated in different parts of the world, beyond what is shown in books and beyond where I grew up, trained and started my medical career. "Obrigada" ECGI and EuGMS, for the opportunity to contribute and learn from you so far.

Additional specific thanks to Ioannis Georgiopoulos and Meltem Koca, for their leadership, guidance and support during the VLOG-group planning and meetings."
